Just Ask Jem Tutoring & Academic Videos
As an English tutor I am consistently confronted by the disconnect between our children and language. Video games and AI offer enticing escapes, which makes reading seem less appealing for our kids. So, how do we motivate them to read?
This answer is not simple but my approach encourages students to think for themselves. We discuss the ideas, issues and construction of their studied text while writing practise TEEL paragraphs and essays in response. Analysis and critical thinking via discussion helps my students gain a clear understanding of their texts and the importance of reading as a first step to improving their English marks.
Using the student’s upcoming assessments to guide our sessions allows for us to align with the West Australian curriculum and keep the student up to date with their English classwork. Keeping teenagers motivated about English work and assessments can be challenging but this is a battle I fight and win every day. My job is to ensure all of my students achieve their best possible outcomes in English and this is what I do best.
